The Shoyoen was built in 1940, as a retreat garden and agriculture base for Otani Kozui,a Japanese royal member, Buddhist leader and explorer. After World War II, it was abandoned for several decades. The farm has turned into a crowded residential area and the garden has shrunk dramatically. This deteriorated structure was planned to be demolished. Fortunately, it was recognized in 2010 as a cultural heritage and underwent a renovation in 2017. However, the entrance to this site needed to be changed to the rear of the building, due to the fact that the main old entrance on the west is cramped by small allies.

When it comes to the illumination, we need to consider; Which story is to be told? What kind of relationship between this historical structure and the modern urban environment should be established?

Warm light - revealing the layer of history
We decoded the former owner’s lifestyle: Otani, a nature enthusiast, used to enjoy mountain views from the east balcony. Therefore, we intended to create a welcoming and lively lighting atmosphere as if the royal member was still living here.

A warm lighting environment, with 2700K and 3000K, is planned to pay homage to the owner. The interior space is illuminated with old fashioned Japanese lanterns and the balcony is softly lit with handrail lighting. Additionally, the old western entrance is highlighted with a bespoke ceiling light to reclaim former glory.

Minimal light - blending this historical landmark into the modern urban fabric
In order not to disturb the neighborhood, minimal lighting is applied, only the corners of the pinched roof are soft lit to call out the architecture's physical features.

All of the lighting fixtures are hidden in structure details. Furthermore anti-glare devices were added to the lighting fixtures to prevent light spill to the adjacent buildings.

At the end of 2020, the Shoyoen opened to the public as a museum. The heritage shines again with a glamorous charm.
