This project is located in the Eight Great Passes scenic area in Qingdao, China, with the Dai Shizhen Villa as the main building. Built in 1930, it was designed by the French architect Bénard. The villa blends French and American history, featuring a red Mansard roof in the French style, white two-story structure, showcasing European architectural elegance.
The restaurant's design draws inspiration from Japanese fishermen's ritual activities and the teppanyaki cooking method. The ritual activities trace back to the Yayoi era, where fishermen prayed for calm seas and abundant harvests, and raising the "Dai Gyō" flag symbolized great fortune and blessings for all. Teppanyaki originated in 20th-century French kitchens, using high-temperature iron plates to preserve the original flavors of ingredients, becoming a unique cooking style.
In terms of design philosophy, the restaurant ingeniously blends French and Japanese styles, redefining "culinary art" with an open-minded approach. The interior space combines contemporary elements with the context of the times and the urban fabric, creating a distinctive atmosphere to enhance the dining experience. Semi-transparent screens made with natural water ripple textures create subtle divisions, allowing glimpses of figures and shadows.
Art installations, stonework, bamboo weavings, lacquerware displays, diverse patterns, and rhythms fill the space with imagination. The juxtaposition of modern surrealism and traditional delicacy, along with the transition of tones and material contrasts, creates a warm, ideal, and comfortable atmosphere. The interplay of stillness and movement, new and old, subtlety and extravagance weaves a delightful and unforgettable experience.
The restaurant is not just a backdrop but also a vessel for stories, carrying various emotions and memories. Every bite is full of surprises, guiding diners to break free from daily life, enjoy socializing, and companionship. The owner proposed a dark color scheme, and the designer presented authenticity through modern imagination. Using a black-white-gray color palette and geometric decorations, they crafted a dining experience with distinct layers, leading people on a journey of delightful surprises. This project is more than just a restaurant; it is a unique space filled with stories and emotions.
