Glencar House is an office development in the heart of Dublin on Merrion Road opposite the RDS and beside the protected structure of 34 to 36 Merrion Road. This setting, in harmony with the client’s brief informed the design and design language used to articulate the building, which was to acknowledge the history, fabric and rhythm of surrounding buildings and propose a design which would not compete or sit uncomfortably within this heritage the building is a LEED and Well V2 AND Wirescore Platinum project which also has a BER A3 rating, This is an exemplar project in biophilic design principles which are uniquely inspired by Irish Landscape and Cultural Heritage. The project is designed around the idea of reconnecting with nature in an urban city setting. This building is a Biophilic Design inspired by Glencar Waterfall. There are SEVEN WELL and BIOPHILLIC Design elements which make this project stand out: 1. The Ogham inspired chiselled Techrite Façade and Brise Soliel (Ogham is a an ancient Celtic text originating from the 4th Century AD) 2. The Siol Bronze Sculpture, a bespoke commission awarded by the Killeen Group to Irish Sculptor Rachel Joynt, of a Sycamore Seed or ‘Helicopter’ seeds that we can nostalgically remember playing with as children. This seed sculpture links on a central core axis through the building to a mature Sycamore tree planted in the courtyard. 3. The Wild, Indigenous planted shared public plaza and 5th Floor Terrace landscaping to encourage biodiversity. 4. The shimmering Anodised Bronze Atrium Waterfall which plays with light and shadow as daylight moves across this space. 6. The Cascade Waterfall motif that is carried through the scheme through the vertical washroom mirrored fins and cascade tube lighting and fluted glass waterfall lightbox and stair balustrade detail. 7. The etched porcelain floor tiles that feature lines from WB Yeats poem’ The Stolen Child’ where sanctuary is offered through a re-invigorated connection with nature. The end result is a modern contemporary office development inspired by Irish Nature and which achieves the highest level of sustainability credentials possible.
