The innovative lighting system that highlighted the historic monument, which at the same time assisted in reducing its environmental footprint, was designed by George Tellos – Lighting Art and commissioned by Electron and iGuzzini. The installation includes over 3,600 LED fixtures, highlighting the clear geometric shapes of the world heritage site.

For the innovative control system the project was awarded the Casambi Award in an international competition as the best project of 2022.

The inauguration of the renewed lighting of the Panathenaic Stadium took place on March 29, 2021, by the President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach in a ceremony attended by the President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee Spyros Capralos.

"This has been quite a challenge for me - illuminating a 2,500 year old stadium, a living symbol of the ancient and modern heritage of sport and the Olympic Games. Ιt has been a very exciting and at the same time rather complicated project, as we had to deal with a lot of norms and forms that needed to be compliant with the Archaeological Authorities but also with the whole history of this unique monument. We had to illuminate the past for the present. Ancient monuments are not merely architectural works, they are symbols which are characterized by a mythical dimension through the centuries. Light acts as a catalyst, discreetly elevating them in our eyes” George Tellos, stated.
