Envisioning a cultural continuum that stitches together the rich historical tapestry of Xuzhou’s ancient city, this design concept aspires to create a vibrant axis of north-south cultural heritage. Through the sophisticated integration of traditional Chinese urban elements—streets, blocks, alleys, and courtyards—crafted with a contemporary architectural dialect, it seeks to instill a profound sense of belonging rooted in tradition. The challenging difficulty is how to integrate the aspects of commercial operation on the basis of preserving historical context of Wenmiao District, so as to increase the attraction of the space to all ages, especially youngsters. The methodology employed is intricate, utilizing a traditional approach of cascading courtyard spaces that foster a harmonious blend of openness and enclosure, activity and tranquility, with courtyards acting as pivotal ‘windows’ within the architectural narrative. This establishes a commercial pathway that orbits around these central courtyard spaces, further enhanced by themed courtyards that inject soulfulness into the design while achieving unity with the structures themselves. The treatment of the project’s micro scale pays homage to the urban texture, achieving a balance between culture and business, creating a “fashionable cultural landmark” imbued with the essence of Xuzhou.
In the execution of this vision, classical architectural elements are embraced extensively. Elements such as traditional sloped roofs and overhanging eaves not only lend an aura of ageless elegance but also champion the preservation and promotion of the area’s historical ethos. The commercial district surrounding the Confucian Temple ingeniously melds these timeless components with modern design elements—glass curtain walls, steel frame constructions—marrying historical authenticity with modern functionality and aesthetic. The architectural and landscape design delineates clear zones for shopping, dining, and entertainment, meeting commercial imperatives while enhancing the visitor experience. Night illumination is thoughtfully designed, with LED lighting subtly placed under eaves to accentuate the architectural forms, adding depth and a sense of dimensionality.
