This building is located in the center of the Peking University campus and is used as a scientific and educational laboratory. The spatial functions are mainly divided into three parts: the enclosed space is used as a laboratory, the indoor space is used for learning, and the semi-outdoor space is used for public use. The doors of the building can be fully opened to integrate the indoor space with the outdoor space, and it can be used as a multi-functional space such as a display space.
The building is perfectly integrated with the surrounding environment. The white metal paint and steel frame structure are consistent with the existing campus buildings. At the same time, through the partially transparent roof, you can look up and see the swaying leaves and the natural light. The arc-shaped eaves extend downward, pressing people's sight downward to the landscape of the grass in front of the building.
The architectural form emphasizes the sense of technology, raising the ground upward to create a feeling of floating on the grass; the three arc-shaped roofs are staggered and overlapped, and the roofs are cross-supported by triangular steel columns and fixed with steel cables, making the building stable, light and full of tension.
In terms of building sustainability, multiple roofs, automatically opening side windows, and fully openable sliding doors are used to maximize the scope and effect of natural ventilation and external connection; transparent heat-insulating acrylic panels are used on some roofs to increase the natural lighting area of the roof; low-cost, efficient and simple energy technology is used to lay flexible photovoltaic panels on one side of the roof, which can provide electricity for equipment and lighting in the house; in addition to the basic reinforced concrete structure, most of the steel structure, aluminum panels and acrylic panels are used to increase flexibility and recycling opportunities while taking into account economy; in addition, the design avoids excessive sunlight from the south and west, raises the ground, and creates space under the eaves to cope with the humid, hot, rainy and strong sunshine climate in southern China.
