Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Opening Show Proposal

In the design proposal, we utilize two-way mirrors and mesh screens to create the illusion of the Bird's Nest（National Stadium）facade extending infinitely into the depths of space. This approach breaks the original flatness of the facade, resulting in an ethereal, mysterious, and crystalline effect. It transforms the Bird's Nest into an ice prism or kaleidoscope, reflecting a myriad of ice and snow imagery, symbolizing the endless cycle of life.



The Bird's Nest stadium features 24 main structural support points, coinciding with the 24th Winter Olympics held in Beijing. Additionally, the opening ceremony falls on the day of Lichun（Beginning of Spring）, the first of the 24 solar terms. In this design, the exterior of the main structure is wrapped with a membrane structure, and its internal trusses are reinforced with fiber optics. When illuminated, the entire structure transforms into a crystalline ice prism, with the internal trusses resembling glowing snowflakes encased in ice. The combination of these elements resemble natural icicles, bringing out the Bird's Nest's romantic charm.



During the ceremony, the 24 main structures are illuminated one by one, symbolizing the progression of the 24 Winter Olympics. The structure representing the 24th Beijing Winter Olympics corresponds to Lichun（Beginning of Spring） in the 24 solar terms chart and is located slightly northeast of the Bird's Nest. Similarly, the countdown method of 12+1 can be used for the 13th Winter Paralympics opening ceremony, with 12 structures being lit up evenly. The 13th structure represents the new era of the Winter Paralympics.



Looking outward from within the Bird's Nest, the entire roof structure is envisioned as a layer of ice, creating the sensation of being immersed in a world frozen for millennia. As the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics and Paralympics unfold, the earth awakens with spring. The linear structure of the roof, reminiscent of "leaf veins," appears to float on water. Together, these elements symbolize the ceaseless vitality of life and the arrival of spring.
