Some say that the package is the art of trash. How to make full use of a package itself is a key task in this case as material to be reused or recycled helps release the environmental pollution and the waste of resources. In Africa, there are 33 countries underprivileged, taking up to 70% of the total number globally. The population is over 400 million, and most of them are still leading a life without electricity or short of clean water. Solar Media has been supplying solar- energized lighting equipment for Africa. One major reason that causes poverty in Africa is an extremely bad sanitary condition. Food and utensils are exposed to air, or worse, bacteria, while sterilization and disinfection are out of the question. All these are followed by a high rate of mortality.
Inside the corrugated-paper box, a solar panel, a screen, 3 LED bulbs, and other accessories are put in compactly. As a single box is with a common size as a drawer, people can turn the empty box into a drawer and the partition panels can be easily sectioned and folded into coat hangers. Every 6 boxes will be packed and transported into a big one, which will be used as a wardrobe or cupboard when emptied.
A water-proof corrugated board is used to make the package, which endows Solar Media with better durability. It will last long enough if people use it to store dishes and clothes. We, as designers, simply hope that people’s life can be changed towards the better side with even a little extra effort.
