With its new permanent exhibition, Stockholm’s Economy Museum shifts its emphasis from the presentation of coins to telling the history of money and economy in Sweden. Formerly known as the Royal Coin Cabinet and located in a wing of the Swedish History Museum, this interactive museum aims to explain the principles of economy to school-age audiences as part of the country’s aim of increasing economic literacy among citizens for a more active and economically-engaged society. The first part of the exhibition is a journey through Swedish economic history — from the Middle Ages to the present — complemented by objects, audio stories and games. The second part of the museum creates a highly flexible and interactive space, with the visitors as its main protagonists.
These exhibits are aimed at making economic topics interesting and comprehensible, especially for younger generations. Elements like visually-engaging panels guide visitors through different thematic areas, while interactive elements like the value tree and piggy-bank race are designed to turn abstract concepts into relatable, practical experiences. Clear graphics and intuitive layouts ensure easy navigation, leaving space to customize modular areas for customizable learning sessions.
The museum preserves Sweden's position as one of the leaders in forward-thinking public education and its continuous effort to make even a difficult topic like the economy easily understandable by a wide audience.
