Pingtung Western market

Taiwan's traditional markets are dirty, have mixed food odors, and lack good ventilation and lighting planning, resulting in a lower-quality consumer environment and higher energy consumption. Supermarkets, hypermarkets, convenience stores, etc. have also reduced the survival rate of traditional markets.
Pingdong Western Market was established in 1982. It is the main traditional market in the city and has always accompanied the life and development of local people. Due to the age of the building, a structural seismic assessment found that the market structure lacked earthquake resistance. Therefore, it was demolished and rebuilt in July 2022.
Based on sustainable development and environmental factors, the design team improved the environmental problems of traditional markets through high roof forms, natural ventilation, lighting and air-conditioning systems, and low-energy building shell systems (Low E glass, double-layer insulation walls).
This design incorporates the majesty of the mountains into the design. The design introduces green forests and mountain views and integrates them into the building volume, symbolizing the combination of old market culture and new shopping formats, welcoming a new landmark of life.The four walls are painted with Pingtung local customs, showing the coexistence of the market's natural environment and cultural industries.
The design of this project won the Taiwan Green Building Label Bronze Award.
