Situated within the distinctive karst landscape of Guilin, the Sunac Steigenberger Hotel in Guilin features an architectural design that harmonizes with the mountainous terrain, unfolding along the lake linearly characterized by its curved and twisted lines. This layout captures the breathtaking views of the distant mountains and the natural allure of the lake. The structure incorporates stilted buildings that ascend gradually, highlighting the architectural characteristics of the Dong minority group in Guilin and reflecting the regional cultural identity. The design of the guest rooms is inspired from the simplistic style of Dong stockaded villages, seamlessly integrating with the surrounding natural environment. The overall architectural approach combines modern Western techniques with interpretations of Eastern ethnic customs.

The lobby's design takes cues from the renowned "Dong Covered Bridge”, utilizing its architectural silhouette and spatial configuration to evoke the ambiance of traditional courtyards and pavilions. This design also invites the unique landscape of Guilin into the interior, telling about a spatial narrative that reconciles inside out. The decorative screens are inspired by patterns found in traditional ethnic attire, which are refined and incorporated into the latticework, complemented by a soft furnishing color on the walls. The walls are constructed using small green bricks and other mixed materials, infusing the space with ethnic charm. A grand chandelier in the lobby, adorned with ethnic headdresses, delivers a striking visual impact, making a trade-off between the elements of tradition and modernity.

In the guest room area, the distinctive local dry-rail building serves as a backdrop for the bed, incorporating national patterns to establish a memorable focal point. The overall design maintains a consistent color palette that reflects the style of the public spaces. The designer employs a layering technique to vividly express the ethnic essence in the soft furnishings, and embody these characteristics through an abstract internationalization approach, setting the hotel apart from other local accommodations.
