KINOSHITASEIAN Co., Ltd.

Country / Region

Japan

This is a traditional Japanese confectionery brand developed by a company specializing in the production of anko (sweet red bean paste), a staple of Japan’s culinary heritage. Using carefully selected ingredients sourced from various regions of Japan, the products are crafted with the expertise of skilled artisans and a simple, time-honored production method. As a result, they retain the natural flavors of the ingredients, free from additives and artificial coloring.

Originally, this company operated as an OEM manufacturer of anko. However, in launching its own brand, a major challenge arose: how to reach B2C customers and drive sales, in contrast to their traditional B2B clientele. In modern Japan, the demand for Western sweets is increasing, especially among younger generations. Traditional Japanese confectionery is often associated with older consumers, creating a need for a fresh appeal that would attract not only existing fans but also those unfamiliar with wagashi.

To address this, the company broke away from the conventional, solemn designs typically seen in yokan packaging and developed a new design that is both simple and eye-catching. The package features hand-drawn illustrations of the natural ingredients, evoking a sense of freshness and organic quality. The warm and nostalgic design creates an inviting atmosphere, enhancing the enjoyment of a relaxing tea time.

By leveraging the vibrant package design as a hook, the brand successfully introduced yokan and anko to new audiences who had never tried them before, promoting the deliciousness and cultural richness of traditional Japanese sweets. Demand as a gift item also grew, leading to sales that exceeded initial expectations. The company’s long-held commitment to craftsmanship and tradition was effectively conveyed through the product, earning it the grand prize at a regional new product awards competition. As a result, the brand has gained increased recognition and continues to contribute to the revitalization of the local community, with both sales and popularity steadily rising.
