This project is an immersive theatrical experience that fuses spatial design, narrative, and Taiwanese folklore into a haunting exploration of destiny. Built around a "playable theatrical space," the project invites participants on a dreamlike journey through ritual and myth. The story follows a group of university hikers tormented by recurring visions of a mountain lodge, where their search culminates in a ceremonial confrontation with fate. The work reimagines Taoist symbols, feng shui principles, and ghost folklore as interactive narrative devices, forging a new genre that blends psychological horror with cultural mythology. It expands the boundaries between gaming, performance, and environmental storytelling. The project activated a 330-square-meter site in Taipei’s Shilin District within just three months. The design includes nine interconnected scenes: six realistic environments (front yard, dining hall, prayer room, bathroom, guest rooms, courtyard) and three surreal spaces (grand shrine, meditation chamber, sloped altar), with seamless transitions fostering non-linear storytelling and immersive participation. Architectural references from Taiwanese and Hong Kong vernacular buildings, horror cinema, and folk symbolism are intricately woven together. Materials such as terrazzo flooring, distressed wood, paper lanterns, altars, faux moss, and scent design establish a nostalgic, eerie atmosphere. Lighting, soundscapes, and olfactory elements complete the immersive world. To meet the demands of interaction and authenticity, the design employed high-friction distressed wood, terrazzo surfaces, and aged finishes. Moss and rust effects were meticulously handcrafted to simulate decay. Modular structures and shrine elements were engineered with hidden triggers to allow repeated physical interaction without compromising detail. Sliding panels, mirror illusions, pressure-sensitive mechanisms, and embedded lighting systems were incorporated into the environment. Players are invited to explore, uncover secret passages, and propel the narrative through discovery. "Hex" redefines the relationship between stage and audience. It dismantles the static "fixed-stage" model by allowing participants to move freely through shifting scenes, acting simultaneously as characters and witnesses. Through symbolic interaction, they experience fear, guilt, and sorrow while deciphering hidden mysteries. Since launch, "Hex" has sparked acclaim for its cultural translation and emotional immersion. Participants often describe the experience as “unlike anything else,” leaving lasting impressions and profound reflections on belief and destiny.
