Brilliant International - The Fragrance of Taiwanese Coffee

Gukeng in Yunlin is one of Taiwan’s most iconic coffee-producing regions, known for its rolling hills, clean water, and mild climate—ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality coffee. Coffee plays a vital role in sustaining local small farmers and has given rise to a rich and diverse coffee culture. Despite its modest size, Gukeng produces a variety of distinctive coffee flavors, exemplifying the refined and multifaceted nature of Taiwanese agriculture. This project highlights the region’s unique terroir through coffee-themed artistic interpretation, using taste as the medium and light as the language to enhance cultural identity and promote local industry.
The installation centers on the concept of the Coffee Flavor Wheel, combining light, sound, and aroma to create an educational and interactive experience. The wheel showcases a spectrum of coffee flavor profiles—from fruity and nutty to caramel and smoky—guiding visitors through sensory exploration. Motion-triggered light effects are paired with coffee essential oil diffusers and sound elements, delivering an immersive sensory experience. The installation is both visually captivating and informative, fostering public understanding of coffee expertise.

A nearby aroma experience zone allows visitors to explore coffee essential oils, supported by a QR code system that reveals origin details, processing methods, and tasting notes. These narratives connect back to Gukeng’s smallholder farmers, offering insights into the coffee’s top, middle, and base notes. The design emphasizes education, interaction, and regional identity, amplifying both the impact and longevity of the community’s promotional efforts.
