The China Museum of Tibetan Medicine (Shandong Branch) is centered around the core concept of "dialogue between Han and Tibetan civilizations," building a spiritual bond that connects the Tibetan Plateau on the land of Qilu. The design integrates the Tibetan medical theory of the "Three Humors Balance" with the Confucian idea of "harmony between heaven and humanity," interpreting the coexistence of cross-regional cultures through contemporary design language. The spatial layout is inspired by the "eastward transmission route of Tibetan medicinal herbs," drawing on the curvilinear forms of the Tibetan mountains and the Shandong water system to create a layered and interwoven fluid space.
The museum tells the story of the origin and development of Tibetan medicine through five chapters: "Prologue: Origin," "Life: Interdependence," "Legacy: Inheritance," "Healing: Development," and "Power: Aspiration." Using spatial and scenic storytelling, it highlights how Tibetan medicine has summarized its own medical experience over thousands of years, producing foundational works that are still regarded as authoritative today and effectively guiding the theoretical research, teaching dissemination, and clinical practice of Tibetan medicine. It also showcases the unprecedented achievements of Tibetan medicine in resource protection, cultural dissemination, educational training, scientific innovation, pharmaceutical industry, and characteristic medical services.
The design not only displays exquisite Thangka paintings but also immerses visitors in a soul-stirring journey of Tibetan medicine from the entrance. It reproduces historical texts through replication techniques, revealing their precious appearance. When depicting the natural medicinal environment of the Tibetan Plateau, it combines multimedia with scene creation to make visitors feel as if they are on the plateau, watching eagles soar, experiencing the rolling clouds, and getting up close to the unique landscapes thousands of miles away, engaging in a dialogue with all things across time and space. Anchored in cultural mutual learning, this design uses spatial storytelling to eliminate geographical boundaries, allowing the wisdom of Tibetan medicine to be reborn in the soil of Eastern civilization and becoming a contemporary model for the innovative inheritance of national cultural heritage.
