This project explores robotic fabrication to develop a prototype for an easily assembled, reusable, and transportable wall relief system. The system incorporates acoustic absorption and supports the integration of lighting features. Designed with modular construction in mind, the relief is sliced into manageable segments for efficient transport and reconfiguration.
To maintain the visual harmony of constructivist sculpture, we introduced micro surface reliefs that enhance the aesthetic and tactile quality of the cut surfaces. After a comprehensive study of hyperbolic surface rail geometry, we applied a convolutional neural network (CNN) style transfer process to generate formal variations. Utilizing a human-in-the-loop method, we combined the generative power of CNNs with human aesthetic judgment, selecting optimal results through collaborative evaluation.
The extracted formal language from the base and style images was transformed into a modular design system composed of four distinct module types. These modules were recomposed to create a sculpturally expressive and functionally flexible installation.
Robotic fabrication enabled us to overcome conventional limitations of space, material, and form. This approach also supports mass customization, opening new possibilities for integrating sculptural and performative elements into real-world construction.
