Life is a circle, and so is the architecture of Earthward. Conceived as a hospice and clay art therapy center, Earthward is not merely a facility for care - it is a symbolic vessel. By intertwining hospice care and artistic creation, it honors the land, the body, and the continuous rhythms of nature. The project reimagines the final chapter of life not as an ending, but as a place to return: to soil, to memory, and to the quiet act of making something new at life’s threshold.
The spatial sequence begins and ends at the same point, mirroring the cyclical nature of human existence. The space supports emotional healing while embodying the cycles of creation, decay, and renewal. Partially embedded in the mountain terrain, the building becomes a threshold between surface and soil, life and memory.
At its heart lies a central courtyard in open dialogue with the surrounding landscape. This location - renowned for its climate, natural beauty, and history as a retreat - sits at the edge of an ancient ceramic town. The architecture draws from the vaults of traditional pottery kilns, whose forms inspire both communal gathering spaces and quiet alcoves for art display.
Visitors enter at the foot of a hill into a dim, enclosed space - an architectural metaphor for the uncertainty at the start of a life transition. From this darkness, they emerge into a glazed corridor immersed in trees, a liminal threshold between past and future. A series of larger vaults shelter communal space where patients, families, local artisans, and therapists create pottery together. Smaller vaults provide intimate rooms for medical treatment and personal care.
The journey culminates in a sunken pottery display and meditation space. Surrounded by earth, visitors encounter a place of stillness and self-reflection - closing the spatial circle where the end becomes the beginning.
