"Wild Utah" at Utah’s Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City showcases a broad range of the state’s amazing and diverse native wildlife species. A primary goal of the zoo’s major new expansion is to build greater appreciation for wildlife and natural systems that can be seen/experienced in Utah “backyards”—at urban/suburban parks and open spaces, and within drivable distances to wild places such as public forest lands and national parks.
ECOS advised the zoo regarding overall guest experience. Our conceptual design work had major influence on building interiors, pathways, landscaping, interactive playgrounds, and conservation action storylines—stimulating interaction and learning for guests of all ages.
Education and interpretive efforts on the project were often guided by our Nearby Nature ideas:
• Instill a sense of discovery and exploration on-site while inspiring guests to connect with nature “out there”—locally and across the entire wild state of Utah.
• Provide direct experiences and information that assist guests in getting out into nature.
• Increase awe, appreciation, and empathy for Utah’s amazing and diverse wildlife (large and small) and their habitats.
• Encourage guests to be part of the “Hogle Hive” community, using positive modeling to help guests learn more about how they can help protect and co-exist with Utah’s special wildlife.
