The inauguration of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway in 1910 fostered a hybrid culture that blended the Art Deco of French Indochina, Yunnan’s spotted copper craft, and Southeast Asian rattan weaving, shaping a distinctive transitional style. Kunming, located on the 25th parallel north, embodies this dual identity: enriched by mineral veins of the “Asian Diamond Belt” and connected culturally to Southeast Asia through the railway. This heritage inspired the project’s diamond concept, where the Western Hills, urban neon, flowing traffic, and shaded canopies together form the facets of a timeless urban jewel.
Architecturally, the design embraces the artistry of diamond cutting with folding and suspended forms, carving a striking façade into Kunming’s skyline. It redefines luxury as a publicly accessible experience, fusing rarity, refinement, and cultural depth into a civic landmark. The interiors, inspired by Nanyang-style hotels, combine lush greenery, water features, courtyard layouts, and booth seating to balance privacy with shared encounters. This creates a waterside retreat that blends serenity with sophistication, echoing the hospitality of Southeast Asian resorts while serving sales functions.
A core challenge was integrating the sharp geometry of the diamond-cut façade with the softness of Nanyang natural elements. Through 3D parametric modeling, angular architectural language was translated into interior divisions and custom details. Backlit rhomboid metal panels, folded stainless steel water features, and hand-forged copper installations merge strength with delicacy, while stone and rattan elements add warmth and texture. Each space is enriched with greenery, water, and sensory cues, transforming circulation into an immersive journey.
Sustainability is embedded through inventive material applications. Off-cuts of French vein stone are repurposed into mosaics and matte finishes to suit Kunming’s climate. Bronze stainless steel combines recycled copper with modular assembly for future reuse. Laser-cut scraps are regenerated into décor, achieving zero waste, while lightweight panels reduce energy in transport and installation. Translucent onyx, layered with recyclable resin, optimizes natural daylight while eliminating VOC emissions. These strategies fuse cultural storytelling, refined craftsmanship, and ecological responsibility, shaping an enduring diamond for the city.
