I. Design Background and Objectives
With the growing popularity of outdoor camping and exploration activities, travelers increasingly seek lightweight equipment and sustainable energy solutions. Traditional flashlights rely on disposable batteries or power banks, which not only add weight but also generate electronic waste.
The original intention of this design is to allow outdoor enthusiasts to bring wild plants home while reducing their energy consumption during outdoor activities. Centered on the principles of natural energy recycling, sustainable green efficiency, and carbon reduction, this project employs microbial fuel cell technology derived from green plants as its design intervention. The result is an integrated outdoor equipment system — the Plant-Powered Pot and Rechargeable Flashlight Set — combining plant-based power generation, portable lighting, and ecological cultivation.
The project aims to address the following challenges:
1. Reduce the weight of outdoor gear and battery consumption;
2. Establish a closed-loop system of energy collection–utilization–regeneration;
3. Lower carbon emissions during outdoor activities.
Beyond promoting resource recycling and minimizing energy waste, this product also enhances users’ physical and mental well-being and encourages a deeper interest in outdoor exploration.
II. Product Structure Description
The product consists of five main components: the inner plant pot, outer shell, water collection chamber, charging chamber, and flashlight. A microbial fuel cell is embedded within the inner pot, decomposing organic matter produced during plant photosynthesis and generating electricity in the process. This electricity is transmitted via wires to the battery in the charging chamber, which then powers the rechargeable flashlight.
