"The Ancient Tea Horse Road" - A Wood Carving Masterpiece

This monumental wood carving, titled "The Ancient Tea Horse Road," uses the historic trade route as its narrative backbone. Crafted from a single, ancient Qinling cypress root, the piece employs a vertical composition, layering mountain ranges with boldly chiseled, precipitous cliffs. A winding ancient path dramatically cuts through the scene, intricately detailed with flagstone steps and horse hoof prints.

The carving features a caravan of packhorses and their guides, rendered with a combination of in-the-round and openwork techniques. Lean horses, burdened with tea baskets, and "mabang" members in traditional attire, etched with the lines of wind and time, are meticulously depicted. Natural burls form snow-covered textures, while the tree's original curve creates clouds at the top and wavy grain becomes the turbulent Lancang River at the base.

Through robust carving, the artist preserves the wood's rugged texture, guiding the viewer's eye along a dynamic "fan-shaped" pathway. This entirely handmade, three-dimensional sculpture revives the civilization marks of the Tea Horse Trade and the indomitable spirit that conquered its treacherous terrain, elevating it into a spiritual totem of cultural dialogue.

Artistically, the work pursues geometric forms with a sculptural language, primarily employing expressive, freehand knife work to create an archaic texture. Twisting drapery lines and varied textural strokes capture the dynamic moment of humans and horses straining under their loads, emphasizing muscular tension.

The piece utilizes a multi-viewpoint narrative composition and an upward-spiraling spatial sequence, compressing winding mountain paths, the traveling caravan, and distant mist-shrouded peaks into a vertical expanse. This creates a steep ancient road that unfolds as a three-dimensional scroll, offering a rich visual transition from three-dimensional carving to planar line engraving.

The treatment of material solidity and void is masterful. Natural wood grain forms a blurred background, with carved negative space evoking flowing clouds. Relief-carved cloud layers resonate with finely detailed human faces, creating a symphony of density, light, and shadow.
