Arc of Light

【Design Concept】

This residence is anchored by a refined palette of grayish white and creamy almond tones, establishing a serene and timeless foundation. Muted tones, translucent materials, and soft curves work in harmony to transform a modest floor area into a space that feels expansive and composed. In the shared zone, an open-plan layout aligns the living, dining, and kitchen areas along a single axis, allowing daylight to flow gracefully through the space. The entryway screen is elevated as a quiet focal point, guiding the eye while enhancing the flow of ligh. The delicate embossed glass softens and diffuses light for a gentle glow, creating a warm and ritual-like welcoming experience.

【Functionality】

Limited by the site’s conditions, the entryway screen is deliberately set at an angle, directing circulation and maintaining the living room’s privacy. This design enhances visual depth upon entry, creating a layered, inviting first impression. To maximize efficiency, the kitchen island extends and turns along the wall into a compact platform to store small appliances. All activities from preparation, processing to serving are carried out in one direction. The master bedroom continues the soft, muted color palette. Beneath the structural beam, a shallow platform provides display and storage space while also reducing the sense of compression caused by the low beam.

【Innovation and Challenges】

Within a compact 23-ping space, the design lies not in functions, but in avoiding visual fragmentation. Curves are therefore extensively used through the space from the entry screen, storage cabinet handles, the turning edge of the kitchen island, and the master bedroom headboard wall. Rounded lines diminish the rigidity of sharp angles and abrupt transitions. Paired with a palette made of low saturation colours, these rounded forms visually expand the sense of space while preserving a warm, gentle atmosphere.
