Xuanqing Pavilion is a small, temporary pavilion situated along the lakeside of a university campus. Quietly nestled beneath mature trees on the northern edge of the lake, it is backed by a bamboo grove and oriented toward a small fountain and the reflected bamboo on the opposite shore. Rather than being placed as an object, the pavilion appears to have gradually grown from its surroundings, shaped by the existing landscape.
The design begins with a modest gesture. A small stone in the grass was left untouched and became the starting point from which the pavilion is gently lifted off the ground. This subtle elevation creates a lightly suspended place to pause—separating the body from the ground without severing its connection to nature, and quietly signaling a moment of rest.
The pavilion’s walls are not conceived as heavy enclosures. Instead, space is gradually defined through layered separations that establish boundaries without producing a sense of closure. Circular openings in the walls and square apertures above frame views, invite air and light, and allow tree branches to enter the space naturally. Sunlight is filtered into fine, shifting patterns that move slowly across the interior, keeping the pavilion in a continual state of change.
Constructed from lightweight insulated panels, the pavilion was built by the design team themselves. Materials were brought to the site, cut, and assembled piece by piece, allowing spatial qualities to emerge through continuous bodily testing. Standing, sitting, crouching, and moving through the space became ways to calibrate height, proportion, and openness beyond drawings alone. After use, the structure can be dismantled and recycled, leaving minimal impact on the environment.
For students, the pavilion offers an open and unprescribed setting. Some pause to read, others photograph the lake, while many simply step inside for a brief moment before continuing along the path. Once completed, the builders themselves returned as users, gradually realizing that the pavilion’s calm, relaxed, and natural atmosphere was shaped by the accumulation of many small, careful decisions. Rather than asserting itself, Xuanqing Pavilion reveals its presence through everyday encounters with light, movement, and time.
