The Zhangye Twin Towers Silk Road Art & Cultural-Creative Exhibition Hall serves as the flagship anchor of the Zhangye cultural tourism complex. It establishes a new paradigm for multi-format integration, seamlessly blending art exhibitions, educational retreats, boutique hospitality, dining, and cultural & creative product retail. As an embodiment of the “Taiyi Cultural Tourism” brand, it is not only a tribute to the heritage of the Hexi Corridor but also an innovative exploration of efficient, intensive development pathways for cultural tourism.
Guided by the philosophy of “Symbiosis in a Moment, Harmony Between Heaven and Earth,” the design translates the spiritual concept of “A Moment of Thought” into architecture. It captures the open-minded spirit of “Zhangye extending its arms to the Western Regions” and the reverent posture of “hands clasped in prayer.” The building’s form mimics the undulating ridges of the Qilian Mountains through folded plates, while a central atrium symbolizes the Hexi Corridor, channeling light and wind. The facade, clad in gradient-glazed ceramic panels, replicates the vibrant stratification of the Danxia landforms, fusing modern design with local cultural DNA.
Functionally, the project resolves footprint constraints through vertical zoning. The ground-floor gallery uses rammed earth and ultra-clear glass, with an inner courtyard echoing mountain-water harmony. The boutique hotel on the second and third floors features floor-to-ceiling windows framing the snowy peaks, fostering a sense of homecoming and cultural resonance. The rooftop viewing deck and underground gourmet hub offer complementary experiences: boundless contemplation versus earthly warmth.
Addressing Zhangye’s harsh climate, characterized by aridity, cold winters, and frequent sandstorms, the project deeply integrates sustainable technologies. For instance, the use of phase-change energy storage insulation and a rainwater harvesting system ensures living comfort while significantly reducing energy consumption. Furthermore, locally sourced Danxia stone composite panels and reinforced rammed earth unify durability, local relevance, and low-carbon construction. More than just a contemporary cultural beacon that can be seen, inhabited, and felt, this project stands as an ecological community connecting past and future, nature and humanity.
