This design case is a duplex of 140 square construction area meters located in Suzhou, Jiangsu. Due to its location in the center of the building, the structural pattern of the building is regular, but the modifiability of the building itself is limited.

In combination with the customer's needs, we have redistributed the available areas in space. However, due to the limited bearing structure, we've optimized the feel of all the spaces instead of a complete redesign. For instance, we expanded the existing kitchen space and used a hidden three-rail sliding door to extend the view from the dining room to the kitchen, and solved the problem that the open kitchen could not turn on the gas. Besides, as for the use of living space, we coincided with the owner in the view of balcony. That is, remodeled it to the kitchen outside, merged the balcony into the living room, so as to make the visual perception of the space maximum and optimal.

In addition, considering that the owner is accustomed to the duplex living environment, the staircase is an important reason for his choice of duplex residence and at the same time it is also the core node of the case. In view of the use experience of the space such as stair, passage, entryway, guest room, we did not fill stair blindly into an entity, but combined the demand of dimensional function and took use of the higher bottom space through computation. The hallway space was increased with the function of entrance storage of shoes and hats; and on the side, an overhead design was adopted. In this way, the combination of virtual and real makes the entire staircase have practical functions without being too heavy and dull. Besides, the diversion of the first floor to the second floor was designed to create a larger space for the living room without making the stairwell narrow.

Differentiated materials were used to match each other, so as to make the overall temperament of the space elegant and simple.
