INK-PAINTING-STYLE STARS

Project Name: Zhaoqing New District Sports Centre

Project Location： Zhaoqing City, Guangdong Province, China, which was the main venue of the 15th Provincial Sports Event in 2018. There are stadiums, training halls, professional football course, football park and Changli River, which make up the whole Sports Centre.

Architectural Design Concept: It was inspired by Duan Inkstone, which was traditionally one of the most famous inkstones in China and was produced in Zhaoqing City, Guangdong Province. Inkstone was one of the Four Treasures of the Study in the old days, and the other three were Brush, Ink Stick and Paper.

Lighting Design Concept: To intensify and extend the architectural design concept, the key of our lighting design depicts the architecture with light and outlines the beauty of architectural structure with its shadow, using architecture as a canvas, light as ink. It was mainly expressed in the following two aspects:

1) Considering the combination of the traditional Chinese ink painting and the natural views of the stars, we aimed to create a vivid visual effect of ink-painting-style stars. Over 4000 led point lights of different size and power were well-spaced from the roof to the facade, forming a Galaxy laid on the architecture. Combining the traditional Chinese ink painting and the natural views of the stars, we aimed to create a vivid visual effect of ink-painting-style stars by controlling the brightness changes of the point lights with the rhythm of breathing. 2) Like Chinese Lantern and Chinese Shadow Puppet, light up the interior structure with the flood lights and wall washer lights. Light comes out via the internal transparency, and the external architectural structure is presented in the form of silhouette art. The contrast of internal brightness and external darkness, as well as the interlaced light and shadow highlight the beauty of the architectural structure.
