In the Good Old Days

This case which is located in Guanxi Town is a 30-year-old town house. In the early days, the storefront was used as a barber shop to raise whole family and a social space for the hostess and neighbors. Even though the barber shop has been closed long time ago, the whole family still has deep memories. The sons have moved out when they are adults. In recent years, after the hostess became ill and limited mobility, the sons have the idea of renovating the old house and set up an accessible restroom.



The main concept is a large transparent living room which is in the front half of the town house. The hostess with limited mobility can still face the busy street and chat with neighbors. The back half of the town house is divided by sliding doors. The original big kitchen and bathroom spaces are modified into a parents' bedroom, an accessible restroom and a small kitchen. At the same time, the corridor in front of the stairs are widened to serve as a space for the hostess to change clothes.



The designer uses aluminum doors which are setback in the close lightly pebble floor of the arcade to reproduce the lattice doors of traditional townhouses. The large transparent glass allows the hostess to observe the movement on the road at any time. Old neighbors can also enter the living room without restraint to share life matters.



In the early years of the hostess career in the barbershop, she still retained the habit of sitting down and washing her hair. In this renovation, the sink combined with retro white mosaic wall is also integrated into the simple lattice TV wall in milk tea tones. The artificial stone sink and foot stool are both designed at the height used by the hostess. All furniture of the living room are old which is used by the hostess.
