Located on Levels 3 and 4 of Beijing’s Dongba Wanda Plaza in Chaoyang District, this 1,000-square-meter space functions both as a large-format retail destination and as a cultural incubator for the surrounding neighborhood. With 80% of its programming dedicated to immersive experiences, the venue infuses the commercial complex with a distinct cultural identity and forms a key part of Dongba’s emerging “micro-cultural-tourism” ecosystem—one centered on art and humanistic engagement.
Departing from conventional theater models, the project reimagines the cultural venue by integrating performing arts, art education, and exhibition spaces into a cohesive, multi-functional destination. It is designed to become an influential cultural landmark within the area.
Central to its design is the concept of a “transformable theatrical vessel”—a space that can dynamically adapt to support diverse performance formats. A retractable seating system allows the layout to shift seamlessly from a performance hall to an exhibition gallery or a fully immersive environment. A 360-degree panoramic stage further dissolves the boundary between fiction and reality, turning audiences from passive viewers into active participants. This sense of immersion is further deepened by integrated LED media installations and an adaptive acoustic system.
The interior is thoughtfully zoned into distinct yet interconnected areas: a main performance space, an art education studio, an exhibition zone, and a cafe lounge for social interaction. Each area maintains its own identity while enabling fluid circulation throughout.
The design orchestrates a deliberate dialogue between contrasting styles to forge a cohesive, unique visual language. Clean lines and a neutral palette establish visual clarity, epitomizing modern minimalism. Futuristic elements—such as dot-matrix LED displays and motorized retractable seating—create a tech-forward atmosphere, which is balanced by the wabi-sabi sensibility evoked through raw, tactile materials like micro-cement. Together, these elements cultivate a contemplative environment that resonates with the depth of theatrical storytelling.
