Sunlight Forest Kindergarten
Rooted in the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy, Sunlight Forest Kindergarten transforms the concept of a "forest" into its core spatial narrative, creating an environment that offers young children both a sense of order and the freedom to explore.
Upon entering the lobby, visitors are welcomed by a sweeping backdrop of blue skies and lush greenery. A sculptural geometric tree anchors the corner of the space, immediately establishing an immersive natural atmosphere and offering children a sense of psychological safety. Warm wooden flooring flows throughout the school, complemented by natural wood-grain furniture and generous built-in storage. The organic textures and authentic tactile qualities of these materials deepen the enveloping warmth of the "forest" setting — reflecting the Reggio Emilia emphasis on the environment as a third teacher, one that invites rich sensory experience and curiosity-driven discovery.
Building on this natural foundation, the design team introduced an intuitive color-coding system. Five vibrant geometric color blocks are distributed across the walls to clearly define five distinct classroom areas, helping children develop spatial awareness and a sense of belonging within their environment.
To support the diverse needs of contemporary early childhood education, the classrooms are designed with flexible boundaries in mind. Movable partitions integrated with whiteboards and projection screens allow spaces to transition seamlessly between independent classrooms and an open, interconnected activity area — maximizing both versatility and spatial efficiency.
The design also intentionally blurs the boundary between indoors and out. Floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors extend the warm, wood-grain interior visually and physically onto an outdoor wooden deck. The playground beyond continues the forest narrative, with three tree-shaped structural pillars cleverly incorporated alongside swings and a children's climbing wall.
Through natural materials, flexible functionality, and a thoughtful interplay of light and shadow, Sunlight Forest Kindergarten empowers children to explore, create, and grow at their own pace — living in joyful symbiosis with the natural world around them
