About The Entry
The interior design for the HKUST Shanghai Center at the Caohejing Beiyang AI Town (Northern Base) answers a simple yet profound question: how can the high-energy collisions of a tech incubator and the deep focus of a graduate school coexist and mutually empower each other within the same building? The solution lies in establishing order through vertical zoning and guiding behaviour through a clear design language.
This logic begins with functional division. Floors 8 to 10 house the tech incubator—open, fluid, and conducive to spontaneous exchange, creating a dynamic environment where entrepreneurial teams can connect and collaborate. Floors 11 to 13 are the graduate school—quiet, softly lit, with streamlined circulation, fostering an atmosphere of deep academic focus. With active zones placed below and tranquil zones above, a natural psychological transition is created between spaces, allowing two fundamentally different modes of behaviour to thrive without conflict.
Connecting these two worlds is a continuous visual language, anchored in a blue-and-white palette. The blue echoes HKUST’s signature colour, conveying both a rigorous, steadfast academic identity and the forward-looking energy of tech innovation. Geometric and broken-line elements are integrated throughout—clean, structured lines that enhance the sense of technology and modernity while breaking away from the rigidity of traditional interiors, seamlessly fusing aesthetics and functionality.
Through scientific spatial planning, precise stylistic positioning, and meticulous detailing, the project balances the openness required for tech incubation with the quietude essential for academic research. This purpose-driven interior design serves both Shanghai-Hong Kong tech innovation and talent development, demonstrating the professional value and social significance of thoughtful design.
