Between the Faults

Located near Dabbahu Volcano in Ethiopia’s Afar Depression, the project is situated within an active tectonic landscape shaped by geological fissures and continuous crustal movement. The museum occupies a natural void formed by the separation of massive rock formations, allowing architecture to emerge directly from the site’s geological conditions rather than being imposed upon them.

A monolithic box-like volume is inserted between the rock walls, creating a tense equilibrium between solid and void, permanence and change. Visitors enter the space through a sequence of compressed and expanded passages, moving along the exposed rock surfaces and experiencing the scale of the surrounding landscape at close range. Openings carved into the volume frame views of the abyss below, revealing the dramatic consequences of tectonic activity. Through this spatial experience, the museum becomes more than a container for exhibits; it serves as a medium through which visitors directly encounter the power, fragility, and ongoing transformation of the Earth.
