About The Entry
Ruiyang Caitang transforms Lunar New Year red envelopes from disposable festive stationery into a collectible gifting ritual. The limited-edition system combines five illustrated envelopes, a reusable archival tray, and a presentation box whose opening action becomes part of the cultural narrative.
Instead of relying on a literal zodiac animal illustration, the project studies the associations surrounding the goat in Chinese culture: curled horns, soft fleece, auspicious clouds, pastoral landscapes, abundance, harmony, and homecoming. These references are abstracted into five coordinated artworks expressing blessing, renewal, abundance, harmony, and reunion. Ram-horn spirals, meadow plants, fleece-like relief, jade-colored landscapes, and a homecoming path give each envelope a distinct emotional identity while preserving a coherent family language.
The recipient first encounters the closed box as an art object. Two cloud-shaped panels slide apart along concealed tracks, echoing auspicious clouds opening to reveal good fortune. The five envelopes then appear as a collection. Each design can be selected for gifting, replaced independently, or retained in the tray as a seasonal keepsake. This sequence turns access into ceremony and gives the outer package a role beyond protection.
Proposed production uses FSC-certified rigid paperboard, high-cotton art paper, and textured paper stocks. Sculpted embossing, debossed cloud patterns, hot foil, pearlescent ink, fine metallic lines, and selective flocking give the visual stories tactile depth. A portrait proportion and production framework control cost and consistency while allowing surface treatments across the set.
Research mapped cultural associations of the goat and Lunar New Year gifting into visual and functional opportunities. Packaging references were reviewed to avoid decorative cliches and to identify how a limited edition could feel contemporary, ceremonial, and collectible. The modular tray and replaceable envelopes extend the package's life, while the consistent format supports efficient production and future seasonal adaptation.
The design challenge was to give five envelopes individual narratives without losing unity, and to make the presentation box meaningful rather than ornamental. The resulting system connects cultural symbolism, tactile craft, modular replacement, and reusable storage. Ruiyang Caitang positions seasonal packaging as a limited cultural object that can be gifted, collected, displayed, and revisited after the festival.
