About The Entry

Since its harbor was built in 1908, Kaohsiung has grown from a fishing village into Taiwan's industrial port city. Early machinery, sugar, and chemical industries came first. In the 1970s, steel, shipbuilding, and oil followed, and factory chimneys became part of the skyline. Driven by its export processing zones, Kaohsiung once ranked as the world's third busiest container port. The workers of that era built Taiwan's economic miracle. Today, that industrial identity has become the city's cultural foundation, where weathered factory sites and contemporary art thrive side by side.

Our objective was simple: let the table carry this history in its material, not only in its concept.

One of our designers comes from a family that ran one of Kaohsiung's earliest steel processing factories. From the factory's surplus stock, we selected two stainless steel plates and turned them into the tabletop, giving discarded industrial material a second life. The timber came from suppliers around the Da-Fa Industrial District, keeping the entire supply chain within the city.

The execution combines digital precision with human craft. After CNC cutting, local carpenters hand-chiseled every mortise joint to a tight fit, insisting on human hands where machines left off. We raised the tabletop 2 cm above the legs, so a floating shadow line softens the visual weight of steel. Finally, like the locking bars that seal a loaded shipping container, stainless steel square bars clamp the four legs together: a structural solution and a tribute in one.

The table now serves as a conference table in a Kaohsiung office. It is used daily, and it starts conversations. When visitors ask about the design, the story opens into the city's small and medium enterprises, its growth, and the cultural depth Kaohsiung carries. A piece of the factory floor remains in daily use, where it belongs.
