About The Entry
Running promises freedom, yet for visually impaired runners that freedom has long depended on the simplest of tools: a short physical rope and a guide's voice. Pulseline rebuilds this convention as an intelligent tether, weaving navigation, health monitoring and training data into the rope itself, so a runner and a sighted guide can move as one — safe, confident and equal on the track.
The design centers on two lightweight polycarbonate handles, shaped by 3D printing and three years of real guide-running practice. An arc of 70 to 80 degrees cradles the palm for a firmer grip, a taper of 38 to 42 degrees seats it at the center of the hand, and a sculpted finger guard locks the hold in place — working together to keep the heart-rate sensor pressed close and reading true, mile after mile. Braille markings orient the runner by touch, without breaking stride. The rainbow finish offers high visibility on shared roads, its color as bright as the mood after a long run.
A wireless link binds the two handles into one responsive system. The guide's handle, embedded with a gyroscope, translates direction into vibration the runner can feel: a short buzz for a gentle turn, a long buzz for a sharp one, a double buzz to stop — replacing spoken instructions with a private language of touch that holds up on a noisy road. A heart-rate sensor in the runner's handle watches effort in real time, alerting both handles the moment a threshold is crossed, giving the guide time to ease the pace before it becomes a problem. A companion app announces route, pace and splits, and logs every session for runners and coaches. Interchangeable ropes suit daily training, race day, or slower-paced senior runners.
Now in its third generation, Pulseline was shaped across nine months of weekly training runs with visually impaired runners, each session feeding fresh feedback into the design. By turning the length of rope into a living line of information, Pulseline transforms guided running from dependence into a partnership of equals, inviting every runner to own the open track.
