Zhai Yao · Chronicles of Terroi

Zhai Yao · Chronicles of Terroir is a jigsaw puzzle in which the bottle is the unit and the province is the coordinate. Rejecting the crude pasting of cultural symbols, the design returns to the land itself: each bottle takes the dominant color of its native soil as the body, adopts a signature local craft pattern as its side, and sketches the province's mountains and rivers in line drawing at the base. Each bottle becomes a tangible, readable chronicle of its terroir; together, the outlines of provinces assemble into a full map of China.

Chapter One, three bottles now on shelf. Henan · Songzhang: the restrained celadon of Song-dynasty Ru ware, the elegant foundation of the Central Plains, set against Shang-Zhou bronze taotie motifs, with line drawings of the Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival and oracle-bone script at the base — a tribute to the origins of Chinese civilization. Guizhou · Shanshui Qianyun: the deep indigo of Miao batik, dark as a Guizhou night sky, wrapped in wax-resist birds and butterflies, silver lines tracing layered drum towers above mountain waters — the living rhythm of an ethnic craft. Jiangsu · Su: the pale celadon-white of the water towns, embroidered with Suzhou silk butterflies, the canal's pavilions and pagodas drawn in light strokes below — the poetry of a thousand-year waterway in a single character.

Three colors, three textures, three provinces, three moods: weight, depth, and warmth. The map is still unfolding — more colors, more patterns, more landscapes are on the way.
