About The Entry

Co-curated by the Buddhist Tzu Chi Charity Foundation and Harvard FAS CAMLab, “Journey to Enlightenment” is an immersive exhibition grounded in scholarly research, field investigation, and digital reconstruction. Structured around eight thematic chapters spanning Buddhist sacred sites, artistic traditions, and philosophical thought, the exhibition traces the unfolding of Buddhist art, thought, and practice across Asia. Beginning at Bodh Gaya and Sarnath and extending to Dunhuang and Borobudur, the journey leads from the Buddha’s enlightenment and the first turning of the Wheel of Dharma to visual narratives of devotion, pilgrimage, and cosmological vision. Visitors encounter the many ways in which Buddhist teachings have taken form across history—as scripture, image, architecture, ritual, and lived experience. Through immersive media, the exhibition reveals how the Dharma moves beyond text and monument, unfolding into a path of perception, reflection, and compassionate action.

Across centuries, stupas, monasteries, sculptures, and murals have given material form to the pursuit of awakening and the enactment of vows, while bearing witness to the transmission and transformation of Buddhism across regions, cultures, and historical periods. Over the past sixty years, the Buddhist Tzu Chi Charity Foundation has embodied this living tradition through compassionate action in the contemporary world, allowing these enduring ideals to continue unfolding through countless encounters among living beings. As past and present converge, art, faith, and life illuminate one another. The journey through these eight chapters traces not only the historical remains of Buddhist civilization, but also a living path of vows and practice—one that moves from individual awareness toward care for all beings, and from a single aspiration toward a shared vision of the common good.
