About The Entry
Split Bent Sconce began as an exploration of steam bending and the way wood responds to heat, pressure, and shaping. Rather than starting with a predetermined form, the design developed through physical bending experiments, allowing the material and process to guide the final object.
The sconce is made from two primary pieces of white oak: a straight vertical element and a steam-bent piece that curves outward from the wall. An integrated LED is positioned within the curved element against the vertical plane. The bend holds and partially shields the light source, directing illumination toward the wall and the inner surfaces of the wood. This creates a soft, indirect glow while reducing direct glare.
The contrast between the straight and curved elements defines the form of the sconce. The straight piece establishes a simple geometric structure, while the gradual bend creates depth and space for the light. When illuminated, light and shadow reveal the curve and natural grain of the wood.
Reduced to two primary wooden elements, the design brings material, structure, and light together in a simple wall-mounted object. The bent piece performs several roles at once, shaping the form while supporting, shielding, and directing the light. Split Bent Sconce explores how a traditional woodworking process can become an active part of the function and character of contemporary lighting.
