"MUSIC, ISLAND, STORIES: POP MUSIC IN TAIWAN", a permanent exhibition at the Taipei Pop Music Center, which is the first exhibition to record the popularity of Mandarin pop music in Taiwan. The exhibition breaks the conventional way of revealing history in timelines, it tells the stories with “time scenes” and “story themes”. Through the common memory in people's livelihoods, it connects pop music works from 1930 to the present. Instead of directly telling the stories, the audience emotionally and physically engages and resonates with the exhibition by themselves.
With the audio guide of the headset and the automatic push broadcast method, the music can be automatically pushed and broadcasted by infrared automatic induction when moving in space. The audience is guided by the voices of well-known musicians and singers, who participated in the history of Taiwan pop music, and there are 111 songs interspersed in the audio guide, bringing in an immersive experience as a concert.
Additionally, this is the first exhibition that utilized RFID tags technology, a five-sided projection, and AR devices in Taiwan. The audience can obtain information on 20 exhibits with the technology and log in to the official website to search for information in terms of the digital collections afterwards.
The exhibition is divided into 12 sections across three floors, which are ‘’Prologue - Chords of Memory’’, ‘’Taipei Circle’’, ‘’Times Electric Store’’, ‘’Taipei Theater’’, ‘’Train Train’’, ‘’Sing Our Song’’, ‘’Spiritual World of Young People’’, ‘’Musical Love Story’’, ‘’Birth of Life’’, ‘’The Glamor of Music’’, ‘’Music Scene’’, ‘’Life Scene – Concert’’. In these sections, a total of 1326 exhibits are displayed with the relative scenes.
With the design of the exhibition area, the audiences can comprehensively understand the history of pop music in Taiwan, the background of pop music, the media of audio and video at that time, singers' manuscripts and personal instrument collections, and even the evolution of music festivals. The exhibition creates a space where the audiences can not only enjoy the content of the exhibition but can feel the emotional connection with the collective memories of the bygone eras.
