Reaching a depth of 36 meters, the Yuyuan Garden Station is the deepest station of Shanghai Metro Line 14, equivalent to the height of a 10-story building. Located in the old neighborhood adjacent to the Bund and the City Temple of Shanghai, it faces the high-rise buildings in Pudong District across the Huangpu River. The station integrates the architectural styles of the East and the West and connects the history, the present and the future.

Shanghai City is known for the spirit of inclusiveness. With the Huangpu River being the mother river, the “water” element is closely tied to the nature of Shanghai. When traveling to and from Pudong District through Yuyuan Garden Station by Line 14, the Huangpu River is right overhead.

Based on the in-depth analysis of local culture, the architects took inspiration from the flowing water of the Huangpu River and translated it into curves on the ceiling, evoking a rhythmic scene that the river's flowing water slaps against the columns. By using architectural language to visualize abstract concepts, the design team created a space that blends classical oriental beauty with a modern sense of technology.

Light can ignite the life of architecture, but underground spaces must rely on artificial lighting. The design team combined the ceiling with LED lighting, so that the large canopy became a 3D LED display that forms an integrated lighting system. In this way, the dynamic light effects transform the relatively monotonous station corridor into an immersive experiential space.

The light can change colors dynamically and be compatible with multimedia and interactive art to realize various spatial effects for different festivals and events. For example, it will create a festive red atmosphere during the Spring Festival, display an unfurling flag during National Day, and showcase falling rose petals at the Qixi Festival. The content of the ceiling is open to the public. Ideas of the citizens, talents and students can be involved through an appropriate selection process, to enrich the wavy ceiling and constantly redefine the lighting environment of Yuyuan Garden Station.
