Wanbao Christian Church

The Wanbao Christian Church project is located in the old town area of Pingtan County, Fujian Province, China, with a total land area of 12,133.80㎡ and a total construction area of 24,048㎡. Since the gospel was introduced to the island county in 1870, after more than a century of dissemination and integration, Christianity has become an important part of the local culture. The construction of the new church is also a testament to the prosperity of local cultural diversity. The architecture and space are based on local traditions while interpreting the connection between the external environment and the internal spirit with modern design language, being more inclusive and open to adapt to the coexistence of future pluralistic concepts and the sustainable development of culture. The project not only extends the architectural form inward but also endows Christian culture and the marine culture of Pingtan Island County with unique storytelling. Through symbols and metaphors, the space is connected with the stories of the Bible, building a spatial narrative centered on symbols, and abstractly interpreting the cultural connotations in the stories of the Bible. Spaces such as the foyer (the Holy Trinity Lord, the 7 Days of Creation, and the salvation of Noah's Ark during the flood), the sanctuary (after the flood, the dove brought back an olive branch; then, the holy light desScended between the waves on both sides, symbolizing the staff dividing the sea and his elect escaping Egypt to find refuge), the wedding hall, and the inner courtyard (metaphorically representing the lilies and valleys in the Song of Solomon, illuminating the path for the new self to move towards the light) have all become vivid chapters and scenes. By combining parametric control manufacturing technology, we can achieve more complex and precise component customization, enhancing the completion and expressiveness of the building, and adjusting the modular control cost according to different situations, adapting to the sustainable use of materials and green construction of the project.
