Gradient Living is a residential project in Osaka’s Kita Senri community, aimed at addressing the generational and social polarization between elderly residents and younger, transient populations. This innovative design reimagines the role of architecture in fostering connections through dynamic spatial strategies inspired by traditional Japanese housing.

The project centers on transitional spaces, redefined as semi-public and semi-private zones, to enrich community interaction while preserving personal privacy. Drawing from traditional tatami rooms and Japanese garden principles, the design emphasizes spatial gradients and subtle boundaries. Key features include dual spiral circulations—one within an enlarged central core and another wrapping the perimeter—ensuring accessibility, connectivity, and opportunities for interaction.
