The Four Points by Sheraton Dunhuang Hotel, designed by the Guangzhou INNOWIDE Creative Design Team, integrates Dunhuang’s rich cultural heritage with contemporary hospitality. The lobby ceiling reinterprets the concentric structure of the Mogao Grottoes’ coffered ceiling using modern craftsmanship. Inspired by the ancient "sky circle and place" concept and the grandeur of Han Que architecture, the design incorporates natural rammed earth paint to evoke the rough texture of the Dunhuang desert. Hidden lighting simulates the Mogao Grottoes’ skylight effect, creating a layered glow radiating from the center—symbolizing the “setting sun reflecting Buddha’s light.” This composition reflects inclusive hospitality, echoing how the Grottoes historically united Eastern and Western cultures. In the lobby, the classic Dunhuang mural “The Life of the Deer King” is recreated using refined wood carving techniques. The deer, representing purity and compassion in Buddhist culture, is rendered with flowing, elegant lines that capture the dynamic spirit of Dunhuang murals, while incorporating modern minimalist aesthetics. In the restaurant, a reinterpretation of the Tang Dynasty mural “Rebound Pipa” utilizes traditional Dunhuang mineral pigments such as cinnabar and gold foil. These elements recreate the mural’s grandeur and are reimagined through a contemporary lens, referencing Dunhuang’s historic status on the Silk Road and offering an immersive dining experience that transports guests back to the Tang era. The Mesh Bar fuses a restaurant, beer bar, and coffee space, offering local craft beer and Western cuisine. The lobby also features a Chinese tea and coffee service area, meeting diverse cultural and social needs. Additional facilities like a gym and children’s club ensure a well-rounded guest experience. Overall, the design thoughtfully blends ancient aesthetics with modern functionality, celebrating Dunhuang’s cultural identity while meeting international standards. Through detailed craftsmanship and storytelling, the hotel becomes not just a place to stay, but a spiritual and artistic retreat—embodying the essence of Dunhuang.
