The Gewu Study House is a cultural and educational space centered on guiding individuals toward mindful practice, with all design materials sourced from nature and systematically constructed in strict adherence to the wisdom and philosophical principles of traditional Chinese architecture.
The core of the space, the dojo, features Asia’s largest single-unit natural spectrum lighting system, inscribed with the Twenty-Eight Constellations diagram. Directly beneath the light source, soil samples in five colors, green, red, white, black, and yellow, corresponding to the Five Elements philosophy (metal, wood, water, fire, earth) are displayed, symbolizing the energy distribution of the earth.
With the Twenty-Eight Constellations above and the five-colored soils below, a harmonious heaven-earth structure is formed, making the energy flow within the space visible and tangible. Practitioners meditate around this installation, perceiving natural rhythms and aligning their qi (life energy) with the external environment, gradually entering a calmer, more focused mental state.
The dojo employs bamboo and sandwich composite panels to create a perfectly enclosed acoustic field. High-frequency sound waves are absorbed by microporous materials, while low-frequency waves are dissipated through cavity resonance, notably reducing reverberation time and eliminating echo interference. The walls and floor are coated with sticky rice mortar containing particles of the five-colored soils, leveraging the pyroelectric effect to release high concentrations of negative oxygen ions and intelligently regulate humidity, achieving self-balancing moisture levels, inhibiting mold, and enhancing comfort.
This system ingeniously utilizes the inherent properties of natural materials, completely eliminating condensation in Shenzhen’s high-temperature, high-humidity environment without relying on modern electrical equipment, achieving over 47% energy savings. It embodies a sustainable design logic rooted in material essence, proactively fostering a practice ecosystem that coexists with nature.
