Taipei New Year’s Party

“Taipei New Year’s Party” is the largest annual concert event in Taiwan, held at the Taipei City Hall Plaza. Spanning six hours and attracting tens of thousands of live attendees, the event is broadcast both on television and online, making it a globally recognized celebration.

This year’s lighting design centered around the theme “Lighting the Future,” with the inverted-V stage structure symbolizing hope and progress. The lighting extended beyond the main stage, enveloping the audience area and surrounding roads to create an immersive environment that redefined the boundaries of traditional performance spaces.

To meet the needs of both live and broadcast audiences, we worked closely with the camera and directing teams to adapt lighting in real time—balancing levels for each shot and enhancing visibility with precise fill lighting. Augmented Reality (AR) visuals were also integrated into the live broadcast, blending digital elements with real-time footage. Lighting cues were carefully aligned with AR content to ensure seamless transitions and unified visual storytelling across mediums.

Light served as the narrative thread throughout the diverse performances. Each musical style was paired with tailored lighting atmospheres—cool tones and soft beams for ballads, sweeping and strobing lights for rock segments, and rhythmic chases and motion trails for dance-heavy numbers. At midnight, lighting synchronized seamlessly with the Taipei 101 fireworks and music, culminating in a multi-sensory crescendo.

To address the challenges of outdoor production, we utilized 3D pre-visualization and lighting simulations to optimize fixture placement and dramatically reduce on-site setup time, minimizing disruption to the surrounding city. The stage structure was further defined with light-edge outlines, enhancing its futuristic presence against the night skyline.
