Crazy & Cozy

The design for this project was inspired by bringing the trending Instagram-café into the home and infusing it with the spirit of Memphis Design from the 80’s. And the goal was to create an Instagram-cafe atmosphere in a residential home wherein the atelier tenants could live as well as provide a fun work setting to use with their other creative gangs also to blend the past and present together by harmonizing the eccentric and animated with the easygoing and comfortable in a timeless design. The design of niche seating in the dining room provides an ambiance of an Instagram-cafe booth and is unlike a typical home. In the living room, the fillet in between wall and ceiling was painted with diagonal stripes to bring in the geometric and asymmetrical elements and pattern from the Memphis movement, and the curve of the wall at each end softens the space. The television cabinet with large cavity shelves display modern pop art, toys, and decorations to bring a taste of commercial into the living room. Mixing the strong Memphis color palette with the soft French macaron colors reveal that while the space is utilized for work, it is also a residence and the palettes together express a sense of harmony. Architectural details were also added to give the design more depth and that mirror the movement in the ceiling, such as the reveal in the cabinets, rounded edge walls and rounded glass for the doors and back of the shelves. Careful consideration was made in the choice of furniture, lighting, and decoration to enhance the design.
