Two years in the making, Nanjing Qiaobei MIX ONE, a shopping center redevelopment project designed by AICO, officially opened its door in June this year. The project is adjacent to the north side of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, which was the first highway-railroad dual purpose bridge across Yangtze River Bridge designed and built by China itself. The bridge is a mile stone of China's economic development and infrastructure, and it’s one of the most important landmarks of Nanjing.

Our design scope includes master planning, facade renovation, commercial plan optimization and space redesign. The design concept is “when the MIX ONE encounters the bridge”. So we allow the building opens itself to the city and framed the urban landscape into the project, so that visitors can interact with the city view from different levels.

We opened up the south facade and elevated the space to 10-meter high, which forms the Great Urban Hall. People can enjoy a new perspective of the bridge and enjoy the city view here. We’ve also rearrange the MEP on the roof so that the idle space has turned into a popular rooftop garden. Many public events have already taken place here. As a popular leisure destination, it helps the mall to attain more foot traffic.

Another challenge is that the original building has a big setback, which was not a friendly scale for pedestrian. Thus, we relocated the entrance of the garage and prepared the connecting tunnel to the subway station in planning, and created a catalytic sink-plaza that combines B1 retail, subway station. The ground plaza becomes a city hub bringing people into underground retail space.

The previous enclosed and banal building has transformed into a clear-crystal box standing harmoniously with the bridge, and showing vitality to on average 100,000 vehicles shuttling across the bridge every day. This is CR Land’s first “MIX ONE” in the city of Nanjing, which now houses more than 240 tenants. The redevelopment dramatically improves the property’s value. More importantly, it is becoming a vibrant tissue of the urban fabric.
