Tobacco Factory and Smoked Memories



“Agriculture” combines “agri” and “culture”, and indicates “cultivation within an acre”. By documenting and understanding details in agriculture and industries in the past, we can accumulate culture and drive civilizations forward.



The tobacco factory in Pingtung is not only a unique local industrial and cultural heritage, but also an important chapter in human civilization.



Tobacco is planted on the gifted and fertile land in Pingtung. From green to yellow, from seeding, harvesting, to processing, it includes local terroir, ancestral wisdom, and diligent labor. Tobacco leaves are processed in detail with various machines, from moisturizing, tip cutting, leaf threshing, re-drying, to packaging. The exhibition reviews cultural essences of this industry in Taiwan. These enormous plants built since 1936 are key locations in this history. Workers were busy between machines and tobacco leaves. Their sophisticated skills must be included in our memories.



The permanent exhibition welcomes visitors to walk into this unique space, and experience these industrial and labor memories from green to yellow.



As the Golden Shine Grows



We hope for Pingtung 1936 Tobacco Culture Base and this permanent exhibition to bring you an authentic experience, so that this time and place may become an homage to the labors and refined crafts of our forebears. The project will at the same time demonstrate how the revitalization of cultural assets is realized and how the exhibition of relics advances with the times.



Going forward, Pingtung Tobacco Factory will become a milestone. Based on rigorous research, in combination with technologies old and new, integrating multidisciplinary knowledge, we shall make the derelict factory live again. When curation is more than displaying artifacts, visiting an exhibition transcends cursory glances.



We once again welcome your visit, with your friends from all around. From the south of the country, this is another of Pingtung’s showcase of its soft power, a beautiful gift of culture, for Taiwan and for the world.
