Interview
1 Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.
I graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in Architectural and Environmental Art Design. As the co-founder of Guangzhou Zhuhui Interior Design Consulting Co., Ltd., I have worked in the interior design industry for ten years since graduation. Regarding every design work as my child, I always treat each space, form, detail, and material seriously. Determined to create high-standard works and product experiences in the pursuit of excellence and perfection, I've been serving a series of customers who demands high quality, value, and design style.
2 What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?
I have been fond of painting since I was a child. It calmed my mind and brought me into deep thinking about the shapes, proportions, colors, and such relations, which I found actually linked together during my later work. Stunning and unexpected effects always come out of serious thinking. Though the progress is complicated, the result turns out to be beautiful. Each moment I see the design finally born into reality, with its unique symbols of charm, I become unprecedentedly proud, steadfast, and enthusiastic about design.
3 Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.
Guangzhou Zhuhui Interior Design, founded in 2018, consists of a passionate and creative design team. We specialize in the design projects of hotels, clubs, restaurants, offices, sales centers, residences, and renovation of small volume buildings, providing overall soft outfit service as well. While adhering to the principles of innovation in design, we offer flexible, innovative, and individual design solutions to improve the design quality and bring more value to our clients. I'm in charge of design creation and team management.
4 What does “design” mean to you?
"Design" is not only a survival skill but also a personal interest for me. It is a kind of comfort and satisfaction to see the works appreciated and liked by people.
5 What’s your favorite kind of design and why?
Modern simple style is my favorite. As a rather inclusive decoration style, it advocates simplicity, whether in terms of color matching or the choices of raw materials, creating fashionable and comfortable spaces with simple structures and perfect details.
6 To you, what makes a “good” design?
It is quite common that customers sometimes hold personal opinions which may not positively affect the design implementation. In this case, I will stick to myself, with active communication, reasoning persuasion, and professionalism to gain the understanding, trust, and support of customers. In my opinion, to present better design effects, we should be confident and persistent in the areas of our expertise. It is important not to be afraid of complexity or disagreement, but to make full communication during the process.
7 Describe your design style and its main characteristics.
I prefer a simple style. I love combining traditional Chinese elements into different forms and structures, having the overall number of colors controlled in a small range, and presenting thought-provoking spaces.
8 Tell us about your design process.
We learned their basic needs and requirements regarding the space through full communication with the owner. In this case, inspired by the streamlining of the Aston Martin supercar, through the in-depth observation of life, artistic thinking, and material investigation, and by multiple considerations of aesthetics, functionality, practicality, comfortability, personal style, and privacy, we tried to make a bold innovation and a simple modern design approach to create a living space with practical functions, aesthetic and commercial value.
9 Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?
In southern China, the architectural forms and building materials are more influenced by the Lingnan culture and Hakka culture, which emphasize more on practicality, suitability and cost performance.
10 Congratulations! As the winner of the 2022 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
It means a kind of affirmation for us, and to some degree may add motivation to our futural working and studying and bring more value to our company's futural development. The efforts haven't been done in vain. The honor belongs to all the hard work and collaboration of our whole team.
11 Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2022 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
In this project, we use exquisite and artistic lines to deliver a comfortable, elegant, distinctive modern high-rise fourplex residence space. In the hustle and bustle of the city, it enables the residents to enjoy the comfort and romance of high-quality life without leaving home.
12 What was the biggest challenge with this project?
It is not easy to realize the willow leaf shape modeling of the ceiling. If for wood or gypsum board material for modeling, there might be problems such as cracking or arc imperfection. And large volume makes it not transportable by the lift. In the end, we decided to adopt GRG on-site lofting, to divide the shape into multiple pieces for on-site splicing and grinding to solve this problem.
13 How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?
By winning this award, more people get to know about our company, in the meantime, we get to know more like-minded excellent talents as well, with whom we may exchange progress, and contribute more together to a better world.
14 What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?
Traveling; keeping fit; visiting art exhibitions.
15 What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?
The cultural heritage, cultural confidence, and the spirit of constant exploration and perseverance make this specialty. Competition and cooperation in the design industry also promote the survival of the fittest and the development and prosperity of this industry.
16 Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?
The boundaries among design shall disappear. In the coming years, boundaries among traditional graphic designers, UI designers, and technologists will blur or even vanish. With a focus on sustainability and regeneration, tools and support systems for design will face continuous upgrading and greater diversity.
17 If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?
To have a firm belief and the consciousness of continuous learning; To constantly improve the professional skills, theoretical knowledge, and aesthetic standard; To observe and think more; Skills are no doubt important, but without good communicative ability, it is hard to get your design ideas well conveyed.
18 What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?
Some domestic design websites; The WeChat official accounts that are within the top 100 ranking in their fields.
19 Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
There is a painful side to design. Sometimes you have to constantly deny your thoughts, to break and reconstruct, especially during the early scheme phase. But eventually, it breaks the cocoon into a butterfly.
20 Who has inspired you in your life and why?
I am always inspired and encouraged by the talented people in my industry. I like experiencing the living spaces, such as visiting and spending nights in some newly built star hotels and closely feeling the most updated creative ideas inside this industry.
21 What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
I consider the secret to success is interest plus strong belief. We should constantly improve our aesthetic standards, keep pace with the times, and learn better communicative skills with different audiences. Design for me is to get your audience's recognization of your work by your design language. If this is not achieved, anything will be in vain.
