About The Entry
A duplex inherently struggles with disconnection between levels, while the double-height void often feels vast and oppressive rather than open and inviting. The more functions a space holds, the more fragmented it becomes. This project takes a different path. Rooted in restrained minimalism and natural elegance, it creates a cohesive whole that holds emotion and invites ease.
The design counters the typical pressure of a duplex with vertical transparency. Glass railings let light and sightlines flow freely between levels. Recessed LED strips turn the staircase into a warm, gently lit path. A deliberately blank corner offers nothing but a quiet mental retreat.
A warm, main-light-free system throughout the home does more than illuminate—it regulates emotion. In the double-height void, the natural contrast between brighter and darker zones tempers the sense of scale, making it feel contained rather than cavernous. In the basement, linear lights and downlights dispel the typical chill of underground spaces.
Material continuity holds the home together—a single palette from the basement to the second floor. A gym handles sweat; a kitchen endures heat; a reading corner asks for quiet; a staircase connects them all. This is where style typically fractures—yet here, micro-cement, solid wood, and natural stone run continuously across every zone. The neutral, understated quality of micro-cement, the warmth of solid wood, and the natural texture of stone keep the palette from feeling flat. Spatial depth emerges not from variety, but from restraint. And this is where the Zen aesthetic and the Wabi-Sabi philosophy of imperfection truly take hold.
