Nestled at the foot of Sheshan Mountain, this standalone villa enjoys a serene setting with private gardens on three sides and a river along the fourth. Designed for a jewelry designer with a penchant for deep, sophisticated tones, the home was originally envisioned in black. To balance the dramatic aesthetic with the warmth and comfort essential for daily living, the final palette shifted to rich dark coffee hues—maintaining elegance while adding a sense of coziness.
The design draws inspiration from the way fine jewelry is presented—its brilliance elevated by the simplest and most profound colors. This philosophy guided the creation of spaces that embody purity and warmth, allowing the homeowner to feel visually indulged yet emotionally grounded.
The first floor serves as a continuous public area, with structural walls removed where possible to create fluid connections between the study, living room, collection display, western kitchen, staircase, and dining room. This openness ensures sightlines flow effortlessly, enabling free movement and visual interaction across zones. In contrast, the basement is a private retreat, featuring a bar and curated display areas for collectibles, books, and fine wines, as well as spaces for cherished musical instruments such as a piano.
One design challenge was integrating multiple functional areas into a cohesive whole while maintaining harmony in tone and atmosphere. This was resolved through a consistent color palette and meticulous detailing. Another challenge—basement waterproofing—was addressed through repeated testing to identify optimal materials and construction techniques. The integration of a sunken garden further transformed the basement, allowing natural light and greenery to dissolve the conventional sense of an underground space.
Material selection reflects a commitment to tactile warmth and natural beauty. Wood veneer serves as the primary surface, imbuing the interiors with organic comfort, while strategic accents in metal and stone introduce a refined contemporary edge.
Sustainably, photovoltaic power generation supports energy efficiency, while a whole-house fresh air system ensures consistently clean indoor air, maintaining quality regardless of external conditions.
Through balancing the client’s aesthetic preferences, spatial functionality, and sustainable living principles, it created a home with personal sanctuary and an elegant statement of design.
